
Hanks' next role - astronaut and commander Jim Lovell, in the docudrama Apollo 13 (1995) - brought him back together with Ron Howard. The film was generally praised by critics as were the performance of the whole group (which comprised Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris) as well as Kathleen Quinlan. The film earned nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Hanks was the voice actor for Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated feature Toy Story (1995). He made his directorial debut one year later with The Thing You Do! (1996) about the rise and fall of a popular 1960s group, also playing the part of a music producer. Time magazine's Richard Schickel described his performance as "charming" and most people who reviewed the film agreed that Hanksrole earned him a spot among the finest romantic comedy actors of the time.
